Type and Attributes of the Toilet
The GKMA SWP supplies only bio-digester toilets. The toilet comes in two different packages. The full package comprises the digester, seat, sink, and superstructure. The other package comprises everything minus the superstructure.
The digester is very durable and can be used for decades. In terms of usage, the system can get full after some time and will only have to be dislodged and used again.
The Micro flush system (which is not the same as the usual WC, and which is equally viable) can take as little as 0.5 litres to flush. The full flush system (as in WC) can take 4 litres or more.
No. The bio-digester toilet does not smell unless there is damage to it or it is full.
The GKMA SWP deliberately puts worms into the digester to facilitate the treatment of the faeces. Worms, however, would not normally move out of the system and enter your room. GAMA does not put cockroaches into the digester. Cockroaches can only enter the system when there are cracks on it. There is so far no report that worms and cockroaches from our digesters have infested the owner’s room.
Cost of Toilet
The complete toilet facility is GHS 1,200.00. The Digester with seat and hand washing basin is GHS 700.00.

Siting the Toilet?
Anywhere (so far as the place is not waterlogged, not on a pathway, not under dispute etc)
Yes you can. However, since the project is limited to the Assemblies listed above, you will have to pay the full cost for the additional unit you want to send outside.
Yes. All things being equal, it can take a minimum of 2 years before desludging. Depending on the nature of the soil and the number of users, it may take several more years before desludging. Some users have used their systems for more than four years and they are still not full.
As little as 4.3m2 of land is enough for a complete toilet with superstructure; 1.4m2 for digester alone.
It is possible. You only need to seek technical advice from the Assembly.
It is possible so long as there is enough space inside the house and all other environmental factors are conducive.
You can buy for your shop or office but without the government subsidy.
Usage and Maintenance
The standard toilet facility can be used by up to 10 people.
It can however be modified to take more people. (This will increase the cost).
Flushing toilet roll into the system will not cause any damage. However, it is recommended that you put all cleansing materials into a covered bin.
There is no need for this practice at all. The only area that needs regular cleaning is the space inside the toilet, the seat and the handwashing basin.
Not at all, except a malfunction, spillage or a crack has been noticed on the system. When this happens, please contact the Environmental Health Unit of your Assembly for help.
This is quite technical so please inform your Metro or Municipal Assembly for support.
There will be at least one of the following signs: When you flush it does not go; the digester will be leaking; or digester may smell.
